87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta 2026 🇵🇹 (2.1) ME – Stage 3 – Beja – Elvas : 182,2 km
Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta is a UCI 2.1 stage race run across a demanding mix of mountain roads, rolling inland terrain, and urban finishes. The route often includes long climbs, sharp gradients, and exposed descents, with heat and fatigue becoming major factors as the race progresses through successive stages. Riders must manage repeated efforts on steep ascents, narrow roads, and technical downhill sections, while the flatter stages can still be shaped by wind and fast team pacing. Race dynamics usually revolve around controlled climbs, breakaway attempts on transitional days, and selective accelerations on summit finishes or uphill drags that split the field. Typical stages may feature substantial elevation gain, multiple categorized climbs, and finales that reward both climbing strength and careful energy management. Finishes can arrive as solo victories, reduced-group sprints, or uphill surges, depending on how much attrition the course creates. The race is defined by endurance, consistency, and the ability to recover day after day.
The sprinters run continued on stage 3 of Volta a Portugal with Leangel Linarez dodging a late crash to claim victory in the strung out sprint in Elvas.
The celebration of the victor was mirrored just behind, Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua teammate João Matias claiming second and also throwing his arms up in celebration at the team one-two delivered after 182.2km of racing from Beja. Tomas Contte (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé) was third for the second day running, with the nine stage event so far dominated by bunch battles, but that is set to soon change.
“We knew this was practically the last opportunity for the sprinters,” said Linarez. “We rode well and stayed calm. I almost crashed in the final kilometre, but I still had the legs to get to the front and win.”
The sprint unfolded after the breakaway of Ronan O’Connor (APS Pro Cycling by Team Cadence Cyclery), José Moreira (GI Group Holding-Simoldes-UDO), Gonçalo Rodrigues (Óbidos Cycling Team) and Joshua Lebo (Meridian Racing p/b De La Uz) were caught at under a kilometre to go. Rodrigues was the last hold out from among the break, however crashed hard after overshooting the exit of a late roundabout, which led to some others going down as well while others were held up on the final run to the line.
From among those remaining at the front, race leader Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) launched early but was swamped before the line, finishing fifth on the stage. That was enough to keep him in yellow for another day, with Oliveira holding a three second advantage to Rafael Reis (Anicolor-Campicarn) heading into stage 4, with its 4,040m of elevation gain over 154.6km and climb to the finish in Torre.
