87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta 2026 🇵🇹 (2.1) ME – Stage 1 – Lourinhã – Sintra : 157,1 km
Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta is a UCI 2.1 stage race run across a demanding mix of mountain roads, rolling inland terrain, and urban finishes. The route often includes long climbs, sharp gradients, and exposed descents, with heat and fatigue becoming major factors as the race progresses through successive stages. Francisco Campos (Tavira-Crédito Agrícola) claimed the stage 1 victory at the Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta after a hilly race into Sintra. Campos was the fastest across the line, beating runner-up Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burpellet BH) and third-placed Carlos Miguel Salgueiro, making it two on the podium for Tavira-Crédito Agrícola.
The trio finished just two seconds ahead of the main field, led across the line by Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who has moved into the overall race lead three seconds ahead of Rafael Reis (Anicolor-Campicarn) and seven seconds ahead of Carlos Miguel Salgueiro.
An early breakaway formed in the 157.1km race from Lourinhã to Sintra that included Gabriel Sousa Silva (Localiza Meoo-Swift Pro Cycling), Iker Bonillo (Feira dos Sofás-Boavista), Patrick Welch (APS Pro Cycling by Team Cadence Cyclery), Diogo Pinto (Credibom-LA Alumínios-Marcos Car) and Andrey Braguini (GI Group Holding-Simoldes-UDO).
However, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG and NSN Cycling pulling at the field, the break was caught with roughly 20km remaining.
There were several attacks as the peloton stretched out toward the finish, with Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé leading the field into 6km to go.
A late-race move of four cleared the field by a slim margin, with Campos winning the sprint ahead of Cavia and Salgueiro.
