Tour of Denmark is a UCI 2.Pro classification stage race that unfolds across the varied and often windswept landscapes of Denmark, where the parcours alternates between flat, fast stretches on wide, well-paved roads and more technical, rolling terrain that tests the riders’ versatility. The race frequently traverses open coastal roads, exposed farmland, and urban circuits, where crosswinds play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the race. The terrain is predominantly flat, but short, punchy climbs with gradients of 4–8% and narrow, winding roads add an element of complexity, particularly in the northern and central regions of the country. The roads are generally smooth and wide, allowing for high-speed racing, but the ever-present wind can split the peloton into echelons, turning the race into a tactical battle of positioning and teamwork.

The race dynamics are heavily influenced by the wind, especially on the coastal and open plains stages, where crosswinds can create splits and force riders to fight for position at the front of the peloton. Attacks often launch on the narrowest sections or during the wind-exposed stretches, while the flatter stages typically conclude in high-speed bunch sprints, though the technical run-ins—featuring sharp turns or narrow roads—can favor late escapes or well-organized lead-outs. The hillier stages introduce short, steep climbs that fracture the peloton, with the strongest riders contesting the finish in reduced sprints or uphill drags. The Tour of Denmark is a race of speed, strategy, and adaptability, where the interplay of wind, terrain, and tactics creates a relentless and unpredictable test for sprinters and all-rounders alike.

Wout van Aert’s series of successive victories at the 2026 Tour of Denmark was halted on stage 4 as young Norwegian Storm Ingebritsen (Uno-X Mobility) attacked away from his early breakaway companions to take an unlikely win.

Ingebritsen made it into a move mid-way through the stage alongside six others, building a lead of two-and-a-half minutes with 25km to go. That lead was just ten seconds heading into the last 3km as Ingebritsen accelerated.

The 21-year-old stayed clear all the way to the line in Faaborg as the rest of the break came to the line just ahead of the bunch. Tommaso Bessega (Polti-VisitMalta) sprinted to second and Finnish champion Axel Källberg was third (Lucky Sport).

Race leader Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) came home safely in the bunch to retain his lead going into the final day.

It took a long time for the early breakaway to establish after the peloton left Rudkøbing for the start of the race’s penultimate stage, with several early moves being neutralised due to intermediate sprint points, each carrying three bonus seconds for the winner.

Lidl-Trek’s Tim Torn Teutenberg, sitting 13th overall coming into the stage, took the first sprint, while Henrik Pedersen (Uno-X Mobility) moved onto the virtual podium by winning the second sprint in Rudkøbing.

Eventually, a group of seven went away, made up of Sébasten Grignard (Lotto-Intermarché), Storm Ingebritsen (Uno-X Mobility), Tommaso Bessega (Polti-VisitMalta), Stian Rosenlund (AIRTOX-Carl Ras), Axel Källberg (Lucky Sport), Francesco Carollo (Swatt Club), and Chris Juul-Jensen (Denmark). They built a lead of 2:30 with 25km to go and just under two laps of the final circuit to navigate, which included a short climb.

With 3km to go, five of the original breakaway were still together with a ten-second lead as Visma-Lease a Bike chased behind, hoping to secure a fourth successive win for Van Aert.

Ingebritsen made a big move with 2.5km left, instantly building an advantage over his companions. They initially chased, but then faded, and Ingebritsen rode to his second career victory.
