49th Giro d’Italia Next Gen 2026 🇮🇹 (2.2U) MU23 – Stage 1 – Reggio Calabria – Vibo Valentia : 168 km
Giro d’Italia Next Gen is a UCI 2.2U classification stage race that traverses the diverse and demanding landscapes of Italy, designed to showcase the next generation of cycling talent against a backdrop of rolling hills, mountainous terrain, and technical challenges. The route features a mix of long, sustained climbs and short, explosive ascents, with gradients often reaching 8–12% on narrow, winding roads that test both endurance and bike-handling skills. The climbs are irregular, with steep ramps, technical descents, and sudden changes in gradient, while the flatter stages are rarely straightforward, often exposed to crosswinds or punctuated by punchy hills that disrupt the peloton’s rhythm.
The race dynamics are defined by aggressive racing, with attacks launching on the steepest sections of the climbs or during the technical descents, where gaps can open in an instant. The high-altitude stages, in particular, thin the field to a select group of climbers, while the sprint finishes reward explosiveness and tactical positioning. The final kilometers of each stage often feature a decisive climb, a fast descent, or a technical run-in through a historic town or village, where a reduced group of riders battles for victory. The Giro d’Italia Next Gen demands climbing prowess, resilience, and tactical intelligence, offering a platform for young riders to prove themselves on some of Italy’s most iconic and challenging roads.
