8th Il Giro d’Abruzzo 2026 (2.1) ME – Stage 1 – Cupello – Casalincontrada : 155 km
Giro d’Abruzzo is a UCI 2.1 four-stage road race across the varied landscapes of Abruzzo, covering approximately 640 km with around 8,200 metres of elevation gain. The route moves between the Adriatic coast, rolling foothills and the higher Apennine terrain, producing a contrasting sequence of mountain, hilly and flatter stages. The opening 155 km stage features the climbs of Montelapiano and Colle dei Ferrari before a 2.4 km final ascent averaging 7.7%, with sections above 10%. The 143 km second stage is mountainous, including Forcella di Acciano and a final 20 km that trends predominantly uphill toward Caramanico Terme. The 159 km third stage is largely flat across the Fucino Plain, while the 182 km finale features a succession of short, steep climbs including Colonnella and Controguerra. Narrow winding roads, fast descents and changing gradients demand careful positioning and energy management. The race can alternate between controlled bunch riding, breakaways and selective climbing battles, with finishes ranging from sprints to reduced groups or late uphill attacks.
