51st Boucles de la Mayenne – Crédit Mutuel 2026 🇫🇷 (2.Pro) ME – Stage 3 – Cossé-le-Vivien – Laval : 147,7 km
Boucles de la Mayenne is a UCI 2.Pro classification that unfolds across the gentle yet deceptively demanding hills of the Mayenne department in northwestern France, where the roads wind through a patchwork of lush green pastures, dense hedgerows, and quiet rural villages. The terrain is predominantly rolling, with short, punchy climbs and long, gradual ascents that accumulate over the course of the race, testing riders’ ability to recover from repeated accelerations. The climbs, though not extreme, often feature gradients of 6–10% on narrow, twisting roads that demand both power and precision, while the descents are fast and technical, their tight corners and uneven surfaces adding an element of risk. The flatter sections are rarely straightforward, with crosswinds sweeping across the open farmland and sudden changes in road direction keeping the peloton on edge.
The race dynamics are shaped by these rolling hills and the tactical opportunities they present, with attacks often launching on the steeper ramps or during moments of wind exposure, the peloton thinning as gaps open and riders scramble to bridge across. The final kilometers frequently feature a fast, technical run-in through the streets of Laval or another picturesque town, where a reduced bunch sprint or a small breakaway group contests the line in a high-speed dash. The Boucles de la Mayenne is a race that rewards explosiveness, tactical awareness, and endurance, capturing the essence of northwestern France’s quiet but relentless roads.
Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM) capped his comeback race with a second victory, sprinting to the win once again at the Boucles de la Mayenne.
The Dutchman jumped from Mads Pedersen’s (Lidl-Trek) wheel in the closing metres of the 147.7km stage in Laval to come through for his second win in three days and secure the points jersey.
Pedersen, who benefitted from a strong lead-out from teammate Søren Kragh Andersen, launched first but didn’t have the pace to hold on to the finish line as Kooij sped past. John Degenkolb (Picnic-PostNL) beat Maikel Zijlaard (Tudor) to take third place.
Meanwhile, there was no drama for stage 2 winner Benoît Cosnefroy (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who finished safely in the peloton to score the overall victory, his fourth of the 2026 season.
He beats Thibaud Gruel (Groupama-FDJ United) to the win by seven seconds.
“I’m very happy – especially since I could throw my hands in the air yesterday, which is the highlight of the week,” Cosnefroy said.
“As for today, my team and I accomplished our mission. There were a lot of supporters around to make the race even sweeter, and I want to say a big ‘kudos’ to the organisers because they really took care of every detail so we could race safely.
“We had to be very focused throughout the day in order to keep the leader’s jersey, as we had to watch out for the tactics of rivals like Groupama’s Thibaud Gruel, who was chasing bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint.”
The break of the day – Pierre Thierry (TotalEnergies), Ethan Hayter (Soudal-QuickStep), Matthias Schwarzbacher (EF Education-EasyPost), and Edoardo Zamperini (Cofidis) – went clear 10km after the start of the 147.7km stage. However, they wouldn’t last to the finish, and were caught 4.4km from the finish line.
From there, the sprint teams took over, with Lidl-Trek, Decathlon CMA CGM, and Visma-Lease a Bike hitting the front. In the end, it was Lidl-Trek who held the prime position in the final two kilometres.
Behind them, however, Kooij was in prime position to strike, working his way up the line to pass Alberto Dainese (Soudal-QuickStep) and Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) to grab Pedersen’s wheel and go by for the win.
