59th Piccola Sanremo 2026 🇮🇹 (1.12) MU23 – Sovizzo – Montecchio Maggiore : 149,8 km
The Piccola Sanremo – Gran Premio Sovizzo is an Italian cycling race held in Sovizzo, Veneto. Created in 1972, it is organized by UC Sovizzo. This event is part of the national calendar of the Italian Cycling Federation.
It was an intense and extraordinary day, with a truly hard-fought and spectacular 59th Piccola San Remo – Memorial Renato Finetti race, decided only in the final stages by a breakaway from Matteo Scofet (Sc Padovani Polo Cherry Bank). The young rider from Turin, thanks to a 50-kilometer breakaway, brought the green and white colors back to the top step of the podium in Sovizzo, ahead of Russian Vadim Grechishkin (Pc Baix Ebre) and Spaniard Jaume Barcelo’ (UC Monaco).
THE REPORT – 150 riders set off from Villa Cordellina Lombardi in Montecchio Maggiore, greeted by the authorities and fans who had come to the Vicenza area to enjoy a splendid day of sport. The early stages of the race saw the peloton moving quickly, with numerous breakaway attempts, but they were unsuccessful. The turning point came just before entering the circuit featuring the Vigo climb, when a large group of 25 riders broke away. From this group, four riders relaunched the attack: Matteo Scofet (Padovani), Davide Licini (Vertematese), Marco Pezzani (Trentino), and Giovanni Zanussi (Gaiaplast Bibanese). The leaders, after the first pass over the Cima di Montemezzo, were joined by Russian Vadim Grechiskin (PC Baix Ebre) and Spaniard Jaume Barcelo’ (UC Monaco); at the same time, Pezzani and Zanussi lost ground on the front, so when the bell rang, there were only four riders left fighting for the overall victory.
On the final two climbs of the day, challenged by the Russian Grechiskin’s push, Licini and Barcelo also lost contact. Matteo Scofet, however, relaunched on the Vigo climb, leaving his Russian rival behind and sprinting towards the finish line. For him, it’s his first victory among the Under 23s and the completion of a fairytale that allows him to carry to the top step of the podium the number 136 that last year belonged to Kevin Bonaldo and that UC Sovizzo had decided to retire in memory of the Treviso native. Behind Scofet, the pursuers arrive one by one with Vadim Grechiskin and Jaume Barcelo’ completing a highly esteemed international podium.
THE VOICES – “This is my first victory among the Under 23s. I dreamed of finishing alone and today I did it. It gives me chills to think that last year Kevin Bonaldo was one kilometer away from reaching the finish line, I’m happy I ran it for him too,” said a beaming Matteo Scofet after the finish, who in 2026 had already celebrated a third-place finish at the MO Frare De Nardi in Vittorio Veneto.
Gianluca Peripoli, President of UC Sovizzo, also expressed great satisfaction: “This year again, thanks to the hard work of the UC Sovizzo board and our numerous staff, we were able to create a great day of cycling that filled our streets with enthusiasm. All the hard work we’ve put in over the past few months paid off with the athletes who battled from the first to the last kilometer, putting on a show worthy of the history and prestige of Piccola Sanremo.” Peripoli then added: “This year too, we had the honor of applauding a podium of great quality. With this joy in my heart, I want to thank my entire board of directors for the excellent work done, all the friendly companies that supported us, the municipalities crossed by the race, starting with the Municipal Administration of Sovizzo led by Mayor Matteo Forlin, the Veneto Region, the Province of Vicenza, the police, and all the volunteers who in various capacities have worked hard to make the event a success. To everyone, a heartfelt thank you and a look forward to 2027 when we will celebrate the sixtieth edition together and we will do so, once again, in grand style.”
On stage, alongside the Mayor of Sovizzo, Matteo Forlin, and the representatives of all the municipalities involved in the race, was also Veneto Regional Councilor Jacopo Maltauro, who emphasized: “Events like these fill the heart with joy and are a testament to the values that distinguish our region. My congratulations to the Uc Sovizzo for the excellent work done and for having succeeded in bringing together the various realities of a unique and beautiful area like ours, which deserves to be seen and appreciated also thanks to major events like this.”
