Gooikse Pijl is a UCI 1.1 one-day road race through the rolling countryside of Flemish Brabant, combining open farmland, narrow rural lanes and a series of short climbs and undulating sections. The course typically covers around 190–200 km, with modest but persistent elevation gain rather than any sustained mountain ascent. Short ramps can reach gradients of 6–10%, while frequent bends, changes in road width and exposed roads make positioning important. Wind can become a significant environmental factor across open fields, with crosswinds capable of stretching the peloton and creating gaps between groups. The race usually develops through an early breakaway before the main field increases the pace on the more selective sections. Repeated accelerations can split the peloton, while flatter roads allow groups to regroup and organize a chase. As the closing circuits approach, riders must balance energy conservation with staying near the front. The finish can come from a large bunch, a reduced group or a late breakaway after the final accelerations.
