13th Giro dell’Emilia Internazionale Donne Elite 2026 (1.Pro) WE – Ferrara – Bologna (San Luca) : 111,3 km
The race Giro dell’Emilia Internazionale Donne Elite is a UCI 1.Pro one-day women’s road race through the rolling and hilly roads of Emilia-Romagna, combining fast opening sections with repeated climbs and a demanding uphill finale. The course typically features mostly paved roads, gentle valley sections and a succession of short to medium ascents before reaching the hills around Bologna. The decisive terrain is characterized by gradients commonly around 5–10%, with steeper ramps creating sharp changes of pace and testing explosive climbing ability. Narrow roads, tight bends and fast descents make positioning important, particularly before the climbs and during transitions between rural and urban sections. The race can begin with controlled breakaway attempts before the peloton accelerates as the route becomes more selective. Repeated climbs gradually reduce the field, while descents provide opportunities to regroup and launch counterattacks. As the finish approaches, the pace becomes increasingly tactical. The final ascent to San Luca provides a sustained uphill effort, making the finish suited to a late attack, reduced group or uphill sprint.
Alessia Vigilia sprung a surprise at the Giro dell’Emilia Donne on Saturday, the UNO-X Mobility rider taking a solo victory after attacking the peloton early in the race.
Sarah Van Dam (Visma-Lease a Bike) took second place six seconds down, while Lauren Dickson (FDJ United-SUEZ) was third, 14 seconds behind the solo winner.
The victory was only the third of the 27-year-old’s career, and the first in three years. It’s certainly the most prestigious, her previous successes coming in .2, fourth-tier events.
Vigilia made her move, attacking an eight-rider breakaway with 40 kilometres to go, after her teammate Francesca Pellegrini had buried herself for her team leader.
The rider from Bolzano powered away solo, pushing her gap to over five minutes on the chase group, but her lead was reduced to slightly over two minutes as she crested San Luca for the first time. Behind her, a group of around 20 riders closed the gap thanks to a push from Visma-Lease a Bike, but Vigilia crossed the finish line alone and claimed her first victory since 2023.
For its 13th edition, this second-tier ProSeries one-day race tackled 111.3km, starting in Ferrara and finishing in Bologna, on the famous San Luca climb, after crossing the finish line at the top of the ascent with only the final 10km to go.
Other than the final, the course was largely flat, a short climb to Botteghino coming with 80km the day’s first obstacle, and the peloton stayed together for the opening kilometres.
