Tour of Romania 2026 🇷🇴 (2.2) ME – Stage 1 – Chișinău – Ungheni : 162 km
Tour of Romania is a UCI 2.2 multi-stage road race crossing the rolling landscapes of Moldova, the Carpathian foothills and southern Romania, with five stages covering more than 800 km. The route begins with a long, predominantly fast stage across open roads before moving into progressively hillier terrain around Piatra Neamț and the Carpathian passes. The third stage, at approximately 200 km, provides the most sustained climbing challenge, while later stages combine rolling roads with longer descents and flatter valley sections. Ascents generally feature moderate gradients, with steeper ramps appearing in the mountain stages, demanding careful energy management and positioning. Open agricultural roads can expose the peloton to crosswinds, while mountain sections bring tighter corners and rapidly changing gradients. Breakaways can form early, but the field must balance controlling escapes with conserving energy for the decisive climbs. The final stage is a short urban circuit in Bucharest, where repeated corners and fast straight sections favor positioning and acceleration. The overall race can be decided through a combination of climbing, time gained in breakaways and reduced-group finishes.
