75th Tour of Austria 2026 🇦🇹 (2.1) ME – Stage 1 – Graz – Gamlitz : 188 km
Tour of Austria is a UCI 2.1 classification stage race that traverses the breathtaking and diverse landscapes of the Austrian Alps, where the roads wind through towering mountain passes, lush valleys, and charming alpine villages. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, featuring long, grueling climbs with gradients ranging from 6–12%, often on narrow, well-paved roads that twist through dense forests and open pastures. The ascents are both sustained and technical, with irregular gradients, sharp switchbacks, and exposed sections where the thin mountain air and unpredictable weather add to the challenge. The descents are fast and demanding, with tight corners, steep drops, and occasional rough surfaces that test a rider’s nerve and bike-handling skills.
The race dynamics are shaped by the relentless climbing and the tactical opportunities it presents, with attacks launching on the steepest sections or during the high-altitude stages, where the peloton thins to a select group of climbers. The flatter stages, though less frequent, are often disrupted by crosswinds or short, punchy hills that create echelons and split the field into smaller groups. The finish styles vary—some stages conclude in a reduced bunch sprint on a slightly uphill drag, while others feature a solo breakaway or a small group of riders contesting the line after a final climb or a technical descent. The Tour of Austria is a race of endurance and strategy, where the stunning alpine scenery provides a dramatic backdrop to the fierce competition on the road.
