29th Tour of Japan 2026 🇯🇵 (2.2) ME – Stage 1 – Sakai – Sakai : 2,6 km
Tour of Japan is a UCI 2.2 classification that traverses the diverse and often dramatic landscapes of the Japanese archipelago, where modern urban sprawl gives way to lush, mountainous interiors and rolling coastal roads. The terrain is a mix of short, punchy climbs and longer, sustained ascents, particularly in stages that venture into the foothills of regions like Izu or the Japanese Alps, where gradients can reach 8–10% on narrow, winding roads that demand both power and precision. The flatter stages, often held in or around major cities like Tokyo or Osaka, are fast and technical, with tight corners, roundabouts, and sudden changes in road width creating a high-speed chess match where positioning is critical. The descents are equally challenging, featuring sharp switchbacks and uneven surfaces that test riders’ bike-handling skills. The race dynamics are shaped by the relentless succession of climbs and the unpredictable weather conditions that often accompany them, with attacks launching on the steepest sections or during moments of crosswind exposure on the more open stretches. The peloton fractures as gaps open, and riders must constantly weigh aggression against conservation of energy, particularly in the high-altitude stages where the thin air adds an extra layer of difficulty. The final kilometers often feature a reduced sprint or a decisive climb into the finish, where the strongest riders emerge from the chaos to contest the stage. The Tour of Japan is a race that blends the raw beauty of Japan’s landscapes with the relentless challenge of its roads, offering a unique test of endurance, tactics, and adaptability.
