7th Baku-Khankendi Azerbaijan Cycling race 2026 🇦🇿 (2.1) ME – Stage 2 – Baku – İsmayıllı : 193,3 km
Baku-Khankendi is a UCI 2.1 classification that stretches across the stark, dramatic landscapes of Azerbaijan, where the roads unfold through a mix of urban sprawl, arid plains, and rugged mountain foothills, culminating in a challenging journey from the Caspian Sea to the southern reaches of the country. The terrain begins with long, flat stretches along the coastal roads of Baku, where the wind howls in from the sea, testing riders’ ability to maintain position in echelons before the route turns inland toward the more undulating landscapes of the interior. As the race progresses, the roads begin to rise and fall, with short, sharp climbs and fast descents cutting through rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds, their gradients rarely exceeding 8% but relentless in their repetition. The final kilometers often feature a gradual ascent or a fast, technical run-in, where the road narrows and the wind swirls unpredictably, forcing riders to stay alert until the very end. The race dynamics are shaped by the combination of wind exposure, rolling terrain, and the occasional steep ramp, with attacks launching on the climbs or during moments of crosswind chaos, the peloton thinning as riders struggle to hold the wheel ahead. The finish often arrives after a fast, open sprint or a reduced bunch battle, where positioning and timing are critical. The Baku-Khankendi is a race of contrasts—where the flat, wind-swept coastal roads give way to the more technical and demanding landscapes of the interior, testing riders’ ability to adapt, endure, and strike at the right moment.
