26th Tour de Kumano 2026 🇯🇵 (2.2) ME – Stage 1 – Inami – Inami : 125,4 km
Tour de Kumano is a UCI 2.2 classification that unfolds across the mist-shrouded mountains and coastal valleys of Japan’s Mie Prefecture, where the roads twist and climb through a landscape of dense forests, terraced rice fields, and steep, rocky slopes. The terrain is a relentless succession of short, punchy climbs and longer, sustained ascents, their gradients often hovering between 6% and 12% for kilometers at a time, forcing riders to maintain a grueling rhythm as the road snakes upward through the humid, tree-lined hills. The descents are fast and technical, their tight bends and narrow lanes demanding precision, while the flatter sections are rare and often exposed to crosswinds that sweep across the open valleys. The race’s defining feature is its repeated ascents of the Kumano Sanzan climbs, short but brutally steep ramps that serve as launchpads for attacks, their slopes lined with spectators who cheer as the peloton fractures under the pressure. The race dynamics are shaped by these climbs, with riders launching repeated accelerations in a bid to thin the group and gain an advantage. The humid conditions add an extra layer of challenge, sapping energy and testing endurance as the race unfolds over multiple days. The finish often arrives after a final, leg-sapping ascent or a fast descent into a valley town, where a reduced bunch sprints for victory, or a lone rider who has timed their move to perfection holds off the chasing pack by a handful of seconds. The race’s mix of climbing, technical descending, and unpredictable weather ensures that only the most adaptable and resilient riders emerge victorious.
