60th Tintrio – Omloop van het Waasland 2026 🇧🇪 (1.2) ME – Lokeren – Kemzeke : 175 km
Omloop van het Waasland is a UCI 1.2 classification that unfolds across the flat yet deceptively challenging landscapes of East Flanders, where the roads cut through vast, open farmland, industrial outskirts, and tight, winding village streets, their surfaces a mix of smooth tarmac and rough, weather-beaten stretches that rattle both bike and rider. The terrain is predominantly flat, but the course is far from simple—narrow roads, sharp turns, and sudden changes in direction force constant accelerations, while the wind, sweeping unhindered across the open plains, turns the race into a tactical battle of positioning and shelter. The route loops repeatedly through the Waasland region, its roads lined with spectators who cheer as the peloton stretches into a long, single-file line, the riders fighting for space at the front to avoid the inevitable splits caused by crosswinds or sudden attacks. The climbs are few and far between, but when they appear, they are short and steep, their gradients punishing any rider caught out of position. The race typically begins at a fast, nervous pace, the peloton strung out as riders test each other’s legs, but it is in the final 50 kilometers where the real drama unfolds—attacks fly off the front, only to be swallowed by the pack moments later, the elastic of the race stretching and snapping with every acceleration. The finish often arrives after a fast, technical run-in through the suburbs, where the roads narrow and the peloton bunches up for a high-speed sprint, the lead-out trains forming in the final kilometers as riders fight for the best position. Alternatively, a late breakaway might slip away on one of the race’s rare climbs or a wind-exposed section, holding off the charging peloton by a bike length or less, the outcome hanging in the balance until the final meter.
