Vuelta a San Juan 2026 🇦🇷 (NE) ME – Stage 3 – Pocito – Pocito : 140,9 km
The traditional and recognized San Juan road cycling race , aimed at male cyclists of the U23 and Elite category, will be attended by renowned local, national and international teams from neighboring countries. The Vuelta a San Juan will have the organization of Pedal Club Olimpia, support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport with the Secretariat of Sports and San Juan Sports Agency, supervision of the San Juan Cycling Federation and the main patronage of the Government of San Juan.
The air that came from the south, the sky with some clouds and 30 degrees of temperature were combined so that the weather played a little more in favor than the previous days to the 116 cyclists who arrived in Pocito to dispute the third stage of the Vuelta a San Juan in its 41st edition.
The start was on Calle 5 and Vidart at 3:36 pm. The 34.3 km circuit was traveled in four opportunities, passing through Calle 5 to the east to Mendoza Street, to the south along Av. Joaquín Uñac to Calle 14, to the west to Calle Aberastain, to the north to Calle 11, to the west to Calle Chacabuco, to the north to Calle 5, to the east to Línea de Meta at intersection with Calle Vidart.
Leandro Velardez (Municipality of Pocito) and José Luis Rodríguez Aguilar (Chile National Team) escaped just after the race and had a 38-second lead over the peloton. After twenty minutes of competition, Rodríguez could not keep up and Velardez continued alone, taking the first Special Pass passing Aberastain and Calle 12. A few meters away he was hit by five cyclists.
The first Meta Sprint in the Goal Line when completing the first turn (35km) was for Gerardo Tivani (Municipality of Pocito), on his birthday (three seconds of bonus); second Rubén Ramos (Municipality of Chimbas) (two second bonuses) and third Leandro Velardez (Municipality of Pocito) (one second bonus) and a few meters away, the peloton reached the fugitives and they were all back together on the route.
The Special Pass 2 was in the second turn, at 53 km on Av. Uñac and Calle 11, leaving the prize to the Chilean Martín Mancilla Labrin (Stamina Racing), who prevailed over the 27 cyclists who had separated from the majority peloton with one minute of light.
The third and last Special Pass on Avenida Uñac y Granaderos, Villa Nacusi was won by the Chilean Jacob De Car (Stamina). At that point, the avant-garde group accumulated 2m23s on the peloton where Nicolás Tivani, the leader of the general, marched.
When 105 kilometers had been completed and at the end of the third turn, the Second Goal Sprint was made, taking the three seconds of bonus Leonardo Cobarrubia (SEP San Juan); second was Matías Balmaceda (Active Force), with two seconds of bonus; third was Julián Barrientos (Municipality of Chimbas) with 1 second bonus.
In the last turn, with 35 kilometers to go, the peloton began to shorten the distance and there the team of the Municipality of Pocito worked to carry out Nico Tivani. When there were 20 km left, three men put distance: Mauricio Domínguez (Municipality of Santa Lucía), Honduran Fredd Matute Baca (HYF Liro) and Emiliano Pérez (Diberbool).
Between the three, the final packing was given and it was Mauricio Domínguez (Municipality of Santa Lucía) who took over the stage with some tranquility, which allowed him to raise his arms in anticipation to celebrate the victory; second place went to Emiliano Pérez (Diberbool) and Fredd Matute Baca (HYF Liro Recovery Sport) was third, finishing the 140 km in 3h05m24s. At the head of the peloton and in fourth place was Francisco Kotsakis (Chile) – (Plus Racing); fifth was Hugo Velázquez (Fundación Emanuel Saldaño).
Born in Tamberías, Calingasta, Mauricio Domínguez, winner of the stage reflected on what happened in Pocito: “The truth is that I am very happy to give a triumph to these beautiful people who are behind me. I can’t believe it yet because we were looking for it with the team, yesterday it was given to us. We are doing things right, day by day and enjoying the good time we are having with the team.”
Did you expect the race to be this fast and intense?
“We always hope that it will be this fast and intense in the Vuelta because the truth is that I think that every cyclist prepares for this, to give the best of themselves and everyone gives their best to arrive at the best time.”
Do you remember at what point in the race you managed to break away from the group and escape?
“It was made a big group I think it was in the second round and then, missing half a turn I think, the escape of three was made and we were able to agree together the three of us and give it up to the finish line.”
Tell us since when you have been preparing this Vuelta a San Juan.
“The truth is that I always wanted to prepare it, I always set it as a goal, to get to the Vuelta well because it is the Vuelta of us and I want to get there well. With my coach after the track I set out to it and we try to get here in the best way.”
What will the people of Tamberías be thinking?
“He will be very happy because the truth is that they know the effort I make because sometimes we get together to eat something and I go to bed early or things like that, I always leave it aside so to speak, but I try to enjoy in the best way when I go to Calingasta because the truth is that they are nice people who send me their love.”
