The Vuelta a Colombia (Spanish for Tour of Colombia) is an annual cycling road race, run over many stages throughout different regions in Colombia and sometimes Venezuela and Ecuador during the first days of August. It is organized by the Colombian Cycling Federation, and is currently held as a category 2.2 event on the UCI America Tour.
With a thrilling finish in the capital of the Casanare department, Antioquia cyclist Wilmar Paredes, of Team Medellín–EPM, won this Friday in the first stage of the 2025 Vuelta a Colombia, a 201-kilometer route between Yopal and Monterrey, before returning to Yopal.
The inaugural stage of this commemorative edition of the 75th anniversary of the Vuelta, classified as UCI 2.2, was run at an average speed of 42.94 km/h, under challenging weather conditions, with the favorite teams taking the lead from the start.
Paredes crossed the finish line with a time of 4 hours, 40 minutes and 51 seconds, leading a compact group in which the young Cristian Vélez (GW Erco Shimano), the best Under-23 of the day, who took second place, and Alejandro Osorio (Orgullo Paisa), third, also shone.
Paredes becomes the first leader of the overall standings in the race, as well as the points classification.
Costa Rican Sebastián Calderón (7C Economy Hyundai), who was one of the most active of the day, winning two sprints and finishing third among the young riders, is now second overall thanks to the bonuses that allow him to wear the U-23 leader, special sprint, and best foreigner jerseys.
