Vuelta a San Juan 2026 🇦🇷 (NE) ME – Stage 9 – San Juan – San Juan : 142,7 km
The traditional and recognized San Juan road cycling race , aimed at male cyclists of the U23 and Elite category, will be attended by renowned local, national and international teams from neighboring countries. The Vuelta a San Juan will have the organization of Pedal Club Olimpia, support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport with the Secretariat of Sports and San Juan Sports Agency, supervision of the San Juan Cycling Federation and the main patronage of the Government of San Juan.
The first day of February 2026 marked the end of the 41st edition of the Vuelta a San Juan, the one that reached a definition that had not been given for many years, with the uncertainty of not knowing who would be the winner, since the Chilean Cristóbal Ramírez Vera arrived with eleven seconds ahead of the Zarato Tomás Contte and with several seconds at stake in the stage, with the final bonus of it plus those who gave the sprint goals.
The concentration was at the intersection of Avenida José Ignacio de la Rosa and Caseros, in front of the Municipality of the City of San Juan. The departure was by controlled train at 15:45 and after 2.5 km it started with the official track on Avenida Circunvalación, with nine turns to make to total 142.7 km. Throughout the 16 kilometers of the ring, thousands of San Juaninos met to encourage cyclists in the last effort, after ten days of competition.
As soon as the stage started, four cyclists began to escape. Three from the Municipality of Pocito: Tomás Contte, Nicolás Tivani, Rodrigo Díaz and Cristóbal Baeza Muñoz (Plus Racing), but at 13 km they were neutralized by the peloton.
The first Meta Sprint when completing the first turn (16.6 KM) was won by Martín Mancilla Labrin (Stamina); 2º was Tomás Contte (Municipality of Pocito) who shortened two seconds in the general and 3rd Lisandro Bravo (Municipality of Chimbas).
On Avenida de Circunvalación, at the height of San Lorenzo Street, in the second turn, a Special Passage was held in tribute to Jorge Quiroga, former sports commissioner of the San Juan Cycling Federation, which was won by Adrián Díaz (Portal / Santa Lucía).
When a round and a half were completed, about twenty men made a difference to the majority group, where the two main candidates to stay with the Vuelta were marching. In that escape was the Chilean Cristóbal Baeza Muñoz (Plus Racing) who became the new leader in the general, accumulating a difference greater than a minute and a half and running in the rain, although it was not intense.
The second Meta Sprint was on the finish line when completing the fourth turn (64.4 KM). Brazilian Joao Pedro Rossi (Localiza) was the winner; Julián Barrientos (Municipality of Chimbas) was second and Tomás Moyano from Punta (Municipality of Santa Lucía) was third.
The third Meta Sprint at the end of the seventh turn (112.6 KM) was the last of the race and was won by the Brazilian cyclist Joao Pedro Rossi (Localiza Meloo / Swift Pro); second was Julián Barrientos (Municipality of Chimbas), who was consecrated the winner of the Sprint Goals of the Vuelta and third was the Honduran Fred Matute Baca (HyF Liro Recovery Sport).
After 3h20m of competition to complete the nine laps, the ninth stage defined the Vuelta a San Juan with the final sprint won by Tomás Moyano (Municipality of Santa Lucía); second was Cristóbal Baeza Muñoz (Plus Racing Cycling Team); third Joao Pedro Rossi (Localiza Meloo / Swift Pro). The peloton arrived late and left Cristóbal Ramírez Vera (2º) and Tomás Contte (3º) empty-handed.
The winner of the Vuelta, Cristóbal Baeza Muñoz, born 23 years ago in Temuco, in southern Chile, after climbing to the top of the podium analyzed the definition of the competition: “First, I can’t believe what I did today. From stage 1 we thought about the general as a team, despite the fact that we came with five riders and obviously the group was super well formed, here in Argentina it is very hard.
At one point it got hard for the group because two of us got off, we stayed with three and we knew how to take it. The time trial was super important for the general and Colorado too. Today the general had been very short, we were all very close and I went out to look for it and it worked, it was a perfect day for me and for the whole team.
I want to thank my family, my brother Martín, Pedro, the Municipality of Temuco, Wilson, Nico, all the guys who are on the Plus Racing staff, the entire team, Camila Rivas who is my physical trainer. I dedicate this triumph to my brother. I had a super important call with him yesterday and that changed my switch.
Regarding today’s strategy, I thought that Contte’s leak at first was going to work and it didn’t. There I jumped again and the group was cut off. Everyone had an interest in getting to the finish line quickly, the team prize, mountain goal, sprint goal, they were with an extra motivation so super happy. To achieve the difference I needed I decided to try since I ran away in the first turn; I was convinced that I had to break.”
Baeza Muñoz is already thinking about what will come in his career: the National Route in Chile, then the Pan American in Colombia and he intends to be in the Vuelta a Colombia and the Vuelta de Río, with his team.
