The third day of the UCI Junior Track World Championships brought a wave of Southern European success. After a brilliant performance in the points race, Eric Igual Ubeda sparked celebrations in the Spanish fan section by claiming gold. In the individual pursuit, Alessio Magagnotti delivered another top performance for Italy. The sprint title went to Veronika Solozobova, while Polina Danshina took home the omnium rainbow jersey. Both female winners competed under the neutral flag.
Emotional gold for Spain in the points race
The Spanish national anthem rang through the velodrome after Eric Igual Ubeda secured gold in a thrilling points race. Moritz Mauss (GER) claimed silver, and Ilya Slesarenko (individual) took bronze.
After the race, an emotional Ubeda reflected on his journey:
“I knew I had to take a lap early, and once I did, I eased off to save energy for the final sprint. It came from deep — the field was so strong. In those final meters, I thought of everything: the sacrifices, my family, my friends… and the gold medal I’ve always dreamed of. Winning here in Apeldoorn means so much. I hope to one day be elite world champion, but this rainbow jersey is the perfect start.”

More gold for Southern Europe
In the individual pursuit, Alessio Magagnotti (ITA) lived up to expectations after setting the fastest time in qualifying. He took gold in the final, with Enaut Urcaregui Sanz (ESP) and Daniel Thompson (GBR) completing the podium.
Commanding performances in the junior women’s events
The women’s omnium began dramatically with a major crash in the scratch race. Dutch rider Maureen Abma was among those involved and had to abandon. Despite the early chaos, Polina Danshina (neutral flag) stayed composed and powered her way to gold, ahead of Ida Fialla (DEN) and Amelie Sanders (AUS).
In the sprint tournament, Veronika Solozobova defeated Zita Gheysens (BEL) in two straight rides to become world champion. The bronze medal match went to a third and final decider, with Matilde Cenci (ITA) just edging out Yiran van ‘t Oosten (NED).
