52th Memorial Valenciaga 2025 🇪🇸 (1.12.1) – Eibar – Eibar : 163,3 km
The Valenciaga Memorial is a Spanish cycling race that is held in the Gipuzkoa municipality of Eibar in the Basque Country. It is a 1-day amateur test that runs through the municipality of Eibar and its neighbors. It is usually done around April each year. Under the organization of the Club Ciclista Eibarrés it began in 1972 and since then it has been positioned as one of the most prestigious events of the Spanish amateur calendar being scoring for the Spanish Cup. In its route it includes ports such as the high of Elgueta, Ixua or San Miguel.
Catalan David Domínguez (Zamora Enamora) has won the 52nd edition of the Memorial Valenciaga after a formidable attack with three kilometres to go, with which he managed to release his two breakaway companions, Iker Mintegi (Laboral Kutxa), second at the finish line, and Jorge Gutiérrez ( Finisher) from Extremadura , third in Eibar.
Xabier Aransolo (Jira-Bira) was one of the first early attempts at forming a breakaway, although his solitary attempt didn’t go very far and soon after a breakaway of twelve riders was formed that would ride together for around 50 kilometres. That leading group, made up of Iñaki Trujillo (Eiser), Carlos Collazos (High Level), Jason Huertas (Louriña), Iñaki Díaz (Laboral Kutxa), Joan Riera (Arabay Vas), Alejandro Granados and Jon Ibarluzea (Telco’m On), José Hernández (Zamora Enamora), Aitor Garmendia (Eibar), Daniel Jiménez (Super Froiz) and Kimetz Etxabe (Baqué), later broke in two after a selection took place on the Ixua slopes.
Édgar Cadena (Telco) and David Domínguez (Zamora Enamora) emerged as the best on the climb to Ixua, effectively ending the breakaway. With Cadena losing ground at San Miguel, Jorge Gutiérrez (Finisher) and Iker Mintegi (Laboral Kutxa) managed to consolidate a gap with Domínguez in the final ten kilometers, with a gap of almost a minute over their pursuers, who lacked the necessary understanding to catch up.
Finally, David Domínguez raised his arms in the final recovery in the historic center of Eibar after an attack in the last three kilometers that surprised Gutiérrez, who had previously tested it, and Iker Mintegui.
Ricardo Zurita (Padronés) remains the elite leader, while Uruguayan Thomas Silva (Caja Rural) remains at the top of the U-23 standings.
Thomas Silva (Caja Rural): “We knew we were facing a very tough race due to the route and the weather, but the whole team was very confident of doing well. There was a break at the start with no one in the lead, but Ibáñez did an exceptional job controlling the peloton. On the passes through Elgeta and Ixua, we were able to make a good climb with Garchu, Arriola, and Samu selecting from the bottom. When the three who eventually finished broke away, we couldn’t be there, but we scored good points for the overall standings and we have to continue like this to defend our lead.”
Iker Mintegi (Laboral Kutxa): “The day was very tough, especially because of the weather. The team did very well, holding their position to avoid the danger of crashes, especially on the descents. In Ixua, the race was decided, I caught the frontrunners, and in San Miguel, we went full throttle. We were three in the lead and started attacking each other with a kilometer and a half to go. In the end, I finished second, and I’m very satisfied.”
